Habiendo leido lo anterior permitanme decir que la versi'on 2.6.18 Ya 
tiene incluidos los ``patch's''
de tiempo real es relativamente facil configurar el kernel para trabajar 
en tiempo real:

Lo he estado utilizando para rutear audio con el excelente servidor de 
audio jack (www.jackaudio.org)

para darse una idea de lo que puede hacer ese kernel con audio pueden 
instalar Agnula (www.agnula.org)
ua distribuci'on basada en DebianMusicDistributiom (DeMuDi) GWau!!
(existe una imagen iso live CD de Agnula).  pero quiz'a lo mejor es  
compilar el kernel 2.6.18 (que cada ciertos milisegundos se desocupa, 
por mas pesados que s'ean los procesos, preemtive kernel),..
compilar Jack audio server y probar xmms, Hydrogen con plugins de jack 
(jack bien puede substituir en el futuro a aRTs, etc'etera).
